Marquesas & Tuamotus
Marquesas (French Polynesia) has high green lush mountains with a spectacular scenery. Fatu Hiva became our favourite island. There is no airport which made it more special for us. Here we got invited to a family. Once for lunch and once for dinner. Although neither of us speak french we somehow managed to communicate anyway. Nuku Hiva was our next destination, about 24h sail north. We then set sail towards the atoll archipelago Tuamotus. These islands are the opposite of Marquesas. Low laying atolls (which once upon a time were high mountains) with a beautifull lagoon, perfect for diving and snorkeling. Manihi became our first atoll to visit. Even here we got invited to a local family, together with another two sailboats. Fernando was a true entrepreneur with both a bakery and a pearl farm. For the first time ever we saw manta rays when we were scuba diving. Impressive and peaceful creatures! Our next atoll to visit was laying about 20h away, Rangiroa. The seconds largest atoll in the world.
